Field cashier remanded over alleged GH¢147k credit union cash theft

A 25-year-old field cashier has been remanded by the Nkawie Circuit Court over the alleged theft of GH¢147,536 from a credit union in the Ashanti Region.
Nicholas Opoku is accused of misappropriating funds belonging to the Anglican Diocese Cooperative Credit Union.
His plea was not taken when he appeared before the court, presided over by Mr Robert Addo.
He is expected to reappear on September 4, 2026.
Police Sergeant Ernest Derry, prosecuting, told the court that the complainant, Isha Ibrahim, is the manager of the credit union.
According to the prosecution, the case began after a customer called the credit union’s office on July 17, 2026, to complain about a missing Susu entry.
The customer said Opoku had collected her daily Susu contribution but failed to record it in her passbook.
The complaint prompted the manager to conduct internal checks.
A preliminary audit allegedly revealed that Opoku had misappropriated GH¢147,536.
The matter was then reported to the Nkawie Police, leading to his arrest.
The prosecution said Opoku admitted in his caution statement that he had used the money for personal expenses.
He allegedly told police that the practice had continued since he was employed in 2020.
After preliminary investigations, he was charged and brought before the court.
The prosecution said investigations are still ongoing.
