Ex-police officer, accomplice jailed 25 years over Tamale robbery

A former police officer and another man have been sentenced to 25 years’ imprisonment each over their role in a robbery case that shook Tamale in 2020.

The Tamale High Court convicted former General Corporal Suleman Ayuba Gbana and his accomplice, Adam Siba, for conspiracy to commit robbery.

Both men were sentenced to 25 years in prison with hard labour.

The judgment was delivered on July 20, 2026, after the court concluded the trial.

The case arose from an armed attack on two foreign exchange dealers, Issahaku Sumaila and Baba Fuseini, on April 15, 2020.

The victims were attacked at the entrance of the then Mum Hotel on the Tamale-Bolgatanga Highway.

During the robbery, the assailants shot both men and made away with GH¢530,000 and other foreign currencies.

Investigations by the Northern Regional Police Command later linked Gbana, who was then serving at the Tamale District Police Station, to the robbery syndicate.

Police said an arrested suspect mentioned him as part of the group involved in the attack.

A search conducted at Gbana’s residence led to the recovery of a Ghana Police Service pistol, 10 rounds of ammunition, three pairs of handcuffs and a brown handbag.

According to police, the pistol had been issued to him during an earlier assignment as a police bodyguard.

He allegedly failed to return the weapon after he was reassigned.

Gbana was arrested on April 23, 2020, and was later interdicted by the Ghana Police Service while the case proceeded in court.

After the trial, the court found him and Adam Siba guilty of conspiracy to commit robbery.

A third accused person, Mohammed Iddrisu, was acquitted and discharged on all charges.

The court also ordered that the pistol and ammunition tendered as exhibits be returned to the Ghana Police Service.
