Ejura MP to summon security chiefs to Parliament over military attack on youths
The group was confronted by armed military officers and police officers when they took to the streets to register their displeasure over the killing of social activist, Ibrahim Mohammed, aka Kaaka
The Member of Parliament for Ejura Sekyedumase, Hon. Bawa Braimah Mohammed has demanded a full inquiry into the death of two persons in his constituency after military officers fired shots at protesters on Tuesday.
According to the legislator, the Ministers for Defence, Interior, and National Security must be collectively held directly responsible for the attacks on the civilians who were “demonstrating and were unarmed.”
“They were coming from the cemetery and out of the pain of losing Kaaka, they were demonstrating and were unarmed. Even if they were holding weapons, it is the duty of the police and the military to use different means to quell the demonstration, but to fire live bullets into the crowd means the soldiers deliberately did it… I am calling on the military high command, the Ministry for National Security, and Ministry for Defence to institute a probe into the shooting incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon because it was highly uncalled-for.”
The protesting youth had taken to the streets to register their displeasure over the killing of social activist, Ibrahim Mohammed, aka Kaaka. However, the group was confronted by armed military officers and police officers.
As part of their efforts to quell the demonstration, the security officers fired shots at the protesters. A police statement claims that this was because the protesters were pelting stones and brandishing clubs at the protesters.
Doctors confirmed on Tuesday that two persons died at the Ejura Government Hospital from gunshot wounds to the chest.
Multiple reports also indicate that some four other persons have sustained critical injuries.
Hon. Braimah Mohammed has also intimated that he would “summon the security chiefs before the committee and the house.”
