Drunk driver remanded after deadly crash involving school bus

In a tragic turn of events in the Ashanti Region, a 50-year-old driver has been remanded into police custody after a fatal accident that claimed three lives and left several schoolchildren injured.
Richard Botwe, the accused, is said to have been driving under the influence of alcohol when the collision occurred on June 11, 2025. According to police reports presented at the Nkawie Circuit Court, Botwe veered off his lane at Atwima-Mim and slammed into a school bus from Mim Life Gate International School.
The early morning crash left 17 pupils and a female teacher injured. The bus driver, a 55-year-old man, and two children aged eight and ten tragically died shortly after being rushed to the Afari Community Hospital.
A breathalyzer test conducted by the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) revealed that Botwe’s blood alcohol level stood at 0.135%, significantly higher than Ghana’s legal limit of 0.08%. During questioning, Botwe admitted to drinking the night before the accident.
He has been charged and is expected to reappear in court on July 11, 2025. His plea was not taken during the initial hearing, presided over by Judge Robert Addo.
The devastating incident has sparked renewed concerns about road safety and the enforcement of DUI laws in the country, especially when children’s lives are at stake.
