A driver’s mate who hid Indian hemp in food meant for a remand inmate at the Teshie Police Station has been fined by an Accra Circuit Court.

Derrick Ayiku, also known as “Allegation”, pleaded guilty to unlawful possession or control of narcotic drugs.

The court convicted him on his own plea and fined him GH¢2,400.

He will serve three months in prison if he fails to pay the fine.

Chief Inspector Wisdom Alorwu told the court that the incident happened at about 8:00pm on April 11, 2026.

Ayiku had gone to the Teshie Police Station to deliver food to an inmate on remand.

The prosecution said the Station NCO on duty became suspicious of Ayiku’s body language.

A search was then conducted on the food.

Police found five wraps of Indian hemp hidden inside the meal.

Ayiku was immediately arrested and detained.

During investigations, he reportedly told police that one Gideon Amartey had asked him to buy the substance.

He admitted hiding the drugs in the food but did not disclose where he obtained them.

The suspected narcotic substance is yet to be sent to the Police Forensic Laboratory for examination.

Investigations are continuing.
