Driver remanded over alleged GH¢750,000 theft from lawyer’s office
He is alleged to have entered the office of a lawyer at Adabraka in Accra after damaging the door lock and cutting electrical cables to disable power supply to the premises.
A driver accused of breaking into his employer’s law office and stealing GH¢750,000 has been remanded by an Accra Circuit Court.
Theophilus Terkpernor, 45, has pleaded not guilty to charges of unlawful entry, causing unlawful damage and stealing.
He is alleged to have entered the office of a lawyer at Adabraka in Accra after damaging the door lock and cutting electrical cables to disable power supply to the premises.
The prosecution says the incident was discovered on May 27, 2026, when the lawyer arrived at his chambers around 2:00pm and realised that the office had been broken into.
Chief Inspector Ebenezer Teye Okuffo told the court that the complainant later engaged an electrician to check why there was no power at the firm.
The inspection revealed that cables in the control room had been cut, causing the CCTV system to stop working.
Further checks in the office showed that GH¢50,000 kept in a container under the lawyer’s table had been stolen.
The complainant also discovered that GH¢700,000 kept in a cabinet was missing.
According to the prosecution, suspicion fell on Terkpernor, who had worked as the complainant’s driver for about one and a half years.
Both the complainant and the accused are said to live at Lapaz in Accra.
The matter was reported to the police, who began investigations.
Chief Inspector Okuffo said police intelligence later led officers to the head office of Standard Chartered Bank at the Ako Adjei Interchange on June 1, 2026.
Terkpernor was allegedly found there trying to deposit GH¢74,400 to pay for a Toyota Corolla he had bought.
The money was retrieved and kept as evidence.
The prosecution said Terkpernor later admitted during investigations that he broke into the office and stole GH¢330,000.
He allegedly told police that he took the money to his home at Lapaz and gave part of it to his son, Kelvin Terkpernor, to keep at Somanya in the Eastern Region.
The accused later led police to Somanya, where the son was arrested but managed to escape.
Police, however, retrieved GH¢203,300 from under the son’s bed.
So far, investigators say GH¢277,700 has been recovered.
The court remanded Terkpernor into lawful custody while investigations continue.
