Driver imprisoned 30 months for stealing cables worth GH¢37,600

A circuit court at Amasaman has handed a 30-month prison sentence with hard labour to a 42-year-old driver who admitted stealing electrical cables from an uncompleted storey building.
The court, presided over by relief judge Mrs Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong, also imposed a GH¢3,000 fine—equivalent to 250 penalty units—and directed the convict, Eric Oppong, to pay GH¢37,000 in compensation to the property owner.
Prosecutors told the court that the theft happened on 10 October 2025, when Oppong entered a fenced ten-bedroom building at Papaase belonging to Mr Richard Danso, who resides in the United Kingdom.
The caretaker, Mr Derrick Segla, lived on the premises and alerted police after finding Oppong on the second floor with a sack containing the stolen cables. With help from officers, Segla arrested him on the spot.
According to Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, Oppong confessed during cautioning that he unlawfully entered the building and removed the installed wiring—valued at GH¢37,600.
Following investigations, he was charged with unlawful entry, causing damage, and theft before being brought before the Amasaman Circuit Court.
With Oppong pleading guilty, the court imposed both custodial and financial penalties, stressing the need to deter similar offences targeting uncompleted buildings in the area.
