Driver, mate remanded over alleged theft of GH¢932k petrol

An Accra Circuit Court has remanded a tanker driver and his mate over the alleged theft of 54,000 litres of petrol valued at GH¢932,040.

The accused persons are Alhassan Amidu, the driver, and Francis Owusu, the driver’s mate.
They have pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit crime, stealing and causing damage.
The prosecution told the court that the complainant, Emmanuel Narh, is the owner of J.K. Narh Transport, a fuel transportation company.
According to the prosecution, Amidu was assigned to drive a tanker with registration number BRU JK 9171-21, with Owusu serving as his mate.
The tanker was loaded with 54,000 litres of petrol to be transported from Tema to Buipe in the Savannah Region.
The prosecution alleged that while on the journey, the two accused persons conspired to sell the fuel.
They are further alleged to have set the tanker ablaze on a section of the road between Kawakpe and Gurupe while travelling towards Buipe.
After the incident, the accused persons allegedly informed the complainant that the tanker and its contents had been destroyed by fire through an accident.
The complainant suspected foul play and reported the matter to police.
The two were subsequently arrested.
During investigations, the prosecution said the accused persons admitted in their caution statements that they tampered with the tanker’s compartment seal.
They allegedly drilled into the seal to gain access to the fuel.
Investigations are still ongoing.
The accused persons are expected to reappear before the court on August 31, 2026.
