Desist from attacking judges over rulings-H.H Attachie to lawyers
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Law Faculty Board of KAAF University on Monday, August 24, 2026, Justice Attachie said lawyers must challenge unfavourable decisions through the courts.
Adenta Circuit Court 1 Judge, Her Honour Angela Attachie, has warned lawyers against attacking judges personally because they disagree with court decisions.
She says such conduct undermines the rule of law and exposes judges to unnecessary threats.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Law Faculty Board of KAAF University on Monday, August 24, 2026, Justice Attachie said lawyers must challenge unfavourable decisions through the courts.
According to her, judges are required to listen to both sides, assess the law and evidence, and make decisions based on what is placed before them.
“You don’t come to the court and come and command the judge to do as you please. The judge is the referee,” she said.
Justice Attachie said any party dissatisfied with a ruling has legal options available, including appeal.
She said resorting to public attacks or threats against judges because of their rulings is dangerous and unacceptable.
The judge disclosed that she has personally been the target of attacks over some of her decisions.
She said some of the attacks have come from lawyers who are also politicians.
“I have been at the receiving end of some of these comments. Every time I make orders, people have issues with it. And so because of that I have a bodyguard,” she said.
Justice Attachie explained that although circuit court judges are generally not entitled to personal security, the Judicial Council has provided her with a bodyguard because of threats against her.
“I’m a circuit court judge. Under our rules, I’m not entitled to one, but I have one now because of the threats from people like Abronye and stuff like that, who has never even been to my court, whose case I have never tried,” she said.
She urged lawyers and members of the public to avoid conduct that endangers judges and their families.
“But making threats to our lives, it’s not the best. We are family people too,” she said.
Justice Attachie also called on the Ghana Bar Association to help discourage lawyers from publicly attacking judges and judicial decisions.
