Deputy IGP sues Captain Smart
The lawsuit, filed on January 2, 2025, stems from remarks made by Captain Smart during a television and radio broadcast on December 27, 2024.
The Deputy Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mr. Christian Tettey Yohunu, has initiated a defamation lawsuit at the Accra High Court against broadcaster Blessed Godsbrain Smart, widely known as Captain Smart, and Media General Limited.
The lawsuit, filed on January 2, 2025, stems from remarks made by Captain Smart during a television and radio broadcast on December 27, 2024.
According to the court documents, Captain Smart alleged that certain members of the Ghana Armed Forces and the Ghana Police Service were involved in plans to undermine Ghana’s constitutional order through a coup d’état.
Additionally, Captain Smart claimed that Mr. Yohunu’s appointment as Deputy IGP was politically influenced. He further alleged that Mr. Yohunu attended meetings to secure the position, visited officials of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), and paid them money to lobby for his appointment, despite purportedly being a member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
In response to these statements, Mr. Yohunu is seeking general damages for defamation and an injunction to prevent further defamatory remarks. He has also requested a court directive for the defendants to retract their statements and issue unreserved apologies through three separate Onua TV broadcasts and radio announcements on Onua FM.
