Defilement of 10-year old: Community Police Officer jailed 15 years

The accused, a Community Police Officer pleaded not guilty to the offence of defilement however in the court’s opinion, the prosecution was able to satisfy the standard of proof thus imprisoned him for 15 years.

After a full trial by the Accra Circuit Court, a Community Police officer at the Airport Police Station, Accra was found guilty and sentenced to 15 years in prison.

The officer, Bright Dzebu pleaded not guilty to the offence of defilement however in the court’s opinion, the prosecution was able to satisfy the standard of proof(beyond reasonable doubt) to establish that the accused indeed had unprotected sex with the minor after enticing her into his room.

The presiding Judge, in sentencing the accused noted that he(Bright Dzebu) is a threat to society and the nation at large thus needed a severe sentence to deter others from attempting such acts.

According to DSP Agnes Boafo, prosecutor of the case, the victim(a 10-year-old girl) lives in the same neighbourhood as the community Police Officer.

In the absence of the victim’s aunt somewhere in 2021, the accused enticed her into his room had sex with her and threatened her not to disclose the incident to anyone.

Subsequent events led the victim's aunt to make a complaint at the Domestic Violence Victims’ Support Unit(DOVVSU) then the accused was apprehended.
