A man has been arrested at the El-Wak Sports Stadium for allegedly having in possession a weapon, as the demonstration by pressure group Arise Ghana enters day two.

“The Police have spotted a demonstrator, Joshua Akamba with a weapon among the crowd of demonstrators gathered around the El-WakStadium, today, 29th June 2022.

He was duly advised by the Police to put the weapon away after his attention was drawn to the illegality associated with such an act. He was also urged to notify other demonstrators to desist from carrying offensive weapons during the demonstration,” the police said on Twitter.

Likewise, organisers of the demonstration say they would not shield anyone found with a weapon, and have therefore asked protestors to surrender any weapons they may have on them.

29 persons were earlier arrested after a clash between police officers and demonstrators yesterday.

According to a police statement, they were arrested for “their participation in violent attacks on the Police and some members of the public including school children during the Arise Ghana demonstration in Accra.”

Both sides have however accused each other of inciting the violence that marred the protest on Tuesday.

The Police Service on its social media pages yesterday, called out the protestors, describing the turnout of events as “shameful.”

“What a shame, we were there to protect you and ensure your safety, but you throw stones at us, injure and hurt us. This behaviour is unacceptable and must be condemned,” it said both on Facebook and Twitter.

At a press conference on Tuesday after the protest, one of the organisers, Rex Omar, accused the police of planting persons to orchestrate the violence that ensued.

“One of the things we found out later is that a gentleman, who was with the police but had dressed as a demonstrator, was the first to pelt stones at the police, in the bid to instigate a reaction from them," he said.

The group is protesting Ghana’s current dire economic conditions.
