Curfew imposed in Gushegu after chieftaincy clashes leave communities burned
The restriction, which took immediate effect, runs from 6:00pm to 6:00am and was announced by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, acting on the advice of the National Security Council through an Executive Instrument.
A dusk-to-dawn curfew has been imposed on several communities in the Gushegu District after violence linked to a chieftaincy dispute led to the burning of five communities.
The restriction, which took immediate effect, runs from 6:00pm to 6:00am and was announced by the Interior Minister, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, acting on the advice of the National Security Council through an Executive Instrument.
The government’s action follows unrest in the Nawuhugu/Kolick electoral area, where tensions flared over the enskinment of a new chief for the Yidaan community.
Officials say the curfew covers a number of settlements, including Paboni, Yidaani, Kukpok, Busun No. 1, Busun No. 2, Nagnani, Nayagile, Donbin, Kolik, Tinyongu and Klokpan.
In a statement issued on 15 April 2026, the Interior Minister appealed to chiefs, elders, youth and other community leaders to remain calm and pursue peaceful ways of resolving the dispute.
The government also announced a complete ban on the possession of firearms, ammunition and other offensive weapons in the affected areas.
Security agencies have been instructed to enforce the order strictly, with authorities warning that anyone found carrying weapons will be arrested and prosecuted.
