The trial of two individuals, Pius Anundoabil Ayoma, 23, and Godwin Klu, 26, accused of conspiring to escape from custody, is set to begin on January 27, 2025, at the Accra Circuit Court. The case will be heard by His Honour Samuel Bright Acquah.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Maxwell Oppong, leading the prosecution, has completed all necessary preparations for the trial. The prosecution plans to call three witnesses to testify against the accused.

Pius, an electrician, and Klu, a tiler, are facing multiple charges, including conspiracy to escape from custody, causing unlawful damage, escaping custody, and abetment.

During the initial hearing, Pius admitted guilt to some charges, including conspiracy to escape and causing unlawful damage. However, the court entered a plea of not guilty after reviewing his explanation. He denied other charges, such as conspiracy to cause damage. Klu pleaded not guilty to all the charges leveled against him.

The charges stem from an incident on March 2, 2023, when both men, remand prisoners at the Manet Police Station, allegedly orchestrated an escape attempt. At the time, Pius was awaiting trial at the High Court on charges of robbery, attempted murder, and rape. Klu was serving a four-year sentence for theft.

The prosecution alleges that the two damaged their cell by breaking the burglar-proof bars on a window, tearing the wire mesh, and creating an opening in the mosquito net to facilitate their escape. While Klu is unable to squeeze through due to his physique, he is accused of assisting Pius, who successfully fled.

Pius remained at large until May 4, 2023, when a team comprising officers from the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) and the Ghana Police Service located him at a hideout between Shukura and Afienya and apprehended him.
