An Accra High Court has scheduled February 11 to consider a bail application for Ben Lord Ababio, a self-proclaimed traditional leader facing a murder charge.

During Tuesday’s court session, Ababio’s legal representatives informed the court of their formal request for bail.

Ababio, also known as Nana Barima, and Nana Kofi Amo Gyekye, also called Nana Fiifi, are currently on trial in connection with a land dispute that reportedly resulted in the death of Lance Corporal Michael Danso, a Ghana Armed Forces officer.

Meanwhile, two other alleged accomplices, identified as Oteng and Salisu, remain at large.

Both Ababio and Gyekye have been charged with conspiracy, while Ababio faces an additional count of murder.

Ababio is being held in custody, whereas Gyekye has been granted bail set at GHC 1 million, with two sureties subject to verification. As a condition of his release, Gyekye was also required to submit his passport to the court registry.

The case stems from an incident on April 30, 2024, around 4:00 PM, when Lance Corporal Danso, alongside his colleagues, Lance Corporals Abdul Omar Rahman and Ametus Matthew, visited the Millennium City Police Station in a Toyota RAV4 to report an alleged encroachment on land owned by Lance Corporal Rahman.

While at the station, Ababio allegedly arrived and opened fire on Lance Corporal Danso, who was behind the wheel of the vehicle, killing him on the spot.
