The National Labour Commission (NLC) says it has obtained a court injunction to stop an ongoing strike by four tertiary education unions, describing the industrial action as illegal.

The order, granted by the High Court on Friday, 13 February 2026, directs the unions’ executives, members and representatives to call off the strike immediately. It also restrains them from continuing with the action.

The injunction covers:

SSA–Universities of Ghana (SSA-UoG)

TEWU of TUC

FUSSAG

TUAAG

The unions began an indefinite strike on Tuesday, 3 February, saying the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission had changed agreed working conditions without proper consultation.

Their key complaints include:

unpaid Tier Two pension arrears and other outstanding obligations

the replacement of overtime allowances with a “call-in allowance”, which they say breaches an agreement signed in 2021

The action has disrupted work at several public universities.

The Minister of Education, Haruna Iddrisu, appealed on 10 February for the unions to suspend the strike after government paid GH¢396 million in Tier Two pension arrears that same day.

He said an additional GH¢600 million debt is still being processed and asked staff to respond to the steps being taken.

The NLC says it is working to keep industrial relations peaceful and compliant with Ghana’s labour laws.
