An activist of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mohammed Zakou, has been granted bail by the Achimota Circuit Court following his arrest for allegedly circulating false information concerning the Vice President, Prof. Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang.
Zakou was taken into custody after publishing a Facebook post on April 12, which read, “Rest well, Her Excellency.” This was despite official communication from the government indicating that the Vice President was only unwell, not deceased.
He was charged with publishing false news. During proceedings, a National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) prosecutor informed the court that Zakou had admitted to authoring the post but insisted it was intended as a message of goodwill, not misinformation.
Zakou’s legal counsel, Gary Nimako Marfo, applied for bail, which was granted by the court in the sum of GHS 100,000, with two sureties. As part of the bail conditions, Zakou must report to the investigating officer weekly.
The case has been adjourned to May 12, 2025, for a case management hearing.
