Three commercial tricycle riders have been fined a combined GH¢1,500 after they were convicted of road traffic offences in Nkawie.

The sanctions prompted Nkawie Circuit Court Judge Robert Addo to caution Pragya operators that traffic violations could result in imprisonment, not merely the payment of fines.

Arafat Ali was fined GH¢300 for operating a tricycle without number plates. He will serve 30 days in prison if he fails to pay.

Samuel Awuni and Issahaku Fumpoli were each fined GH¢600 for riding without licences and insurance. They face default prison terms totalling 13 months if the fines are not paid.

Mr Addo said some riders appeared to believe they could repeatedly disregard traffic regulations and simply pay fines whenever they were prosecuted.

He warned that the law also permitted custodial sentences and urged operators to comply with the rules governing their work to protect their freedom and livelihoods.

Police Inspector Kwaku Frimpong told the court that officers from the Nkawie Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department discovered the offences during a patrol on September 14, 2026.

The officers stopped and inspected the three tricycles between 8:30 a.m. and 9 a.m. as part of an operation to maintain order within the Nkawie community.

The riders were arrested after the inspection, processed by the police and subsequently brought before the court.
