A sanitation court in Accra has convicted ten individuals for violating local sanitation bylaws at the bustling Agbogbloshie Market, one of the capital’s largest trading hubs.

The convicts — eight traders and two tricycle operators — were arrested during an unannounced operation by the Clean Ghana Campaign Taskforce last week, aimed at cracking down on unhygienic trading activities and illegal obstruction within the market.

They were charged with offences including selling food at unauthorised locations, obstructing public pathways, and blocking access roads with tricycles.

All ten pleaded guilty and were each fined GH¢600, totalling GH¢6,000 in penalties.

City authorities say the enforcement forms part of a broader effort to restore order and sanitation discipline in Accra’s markets, where poor waste management and illegal trading practices have become entrenched public health risks.
