The State has informed an Accra High Court that it is still awaiting the analytical report on more than 16 kilograms of suspected narcotics allegedly found in the possession of two South African nationals and a Nigerian.
According to the prosecution, the substances—believed to be methamphetamine—were concealed in two suitcases and discovered during a security operation.
Assistant State Attorney, Mr. Frederick Adu Gyamfi, requested that the accused remain in the custody of the Narcotics Control Commission while investigations continue.
“Our latest update is that we have yet to receive the analytical report from the Ghana Standards Authority on the substances seized at the time of the arrest. In light of this, we are requesting a short adjournment to allow time for the report to be submitted, after which we will proceed with the trial,” he stated.
However, the defense counsel, who was newly engaged to represent the accused, objected to the request, arguing that it was unfair for the prosecution to seek further detention of his clients. He emphasized that the accused had already spent over a month in custody and were entitled to the presumption of innocence until proven guilty.
Presiding over the case, Justice Kizita Koowa Quarshie advised the defense to submit a bail application for consideration formally.
The case has been adjourned to March 11, 2025.
The three accused individuals were apprehended on January 20, 2025, at Kotoka International Airport by officials from the Narcotics Control Commission. The court has yet to take their pleas, despite the charges brought against them.
