Court adjourns Wontumi's bail application to October 15
His lawyers were expected to move the application on Wednesday, August 19.
The Accra High Court has adjourned Chairman Wontumi’s bail pending appeal application to October 15, 2026.
The former New Patriotic Party Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, is seeking release from custody while his appeal against a 20-year prison sentence is determined.
His lawyers were expected to move the application on Wednesday, August 19.
However, the matter could not proceed because Wontumi and his lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, were absent from court.
The NPP Director of Legal Affairs, Gary Nimako, was present during the proceedings.
The court clerk later informed the parties that the trial judge was unavailable and would not sit during the week.
As a result, the court could not hear the application and adjourned the matter to October 15.
The adjournment means Wontumi’s legal team will have to wait until the new date to formally argue for his release pending appeal.
Wontumi is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence after being convicted by the Accra High Court on illegal mining-related offences.
His lawyers have appealed against both the conviction and sentence.
The bail application is separate from the substantive appeal.
It seeks to have him released from custody while the appeal process continues.
