Court adjourns Wontumi Exim bank case to July 27 for further plea talks

The High Court in Accra has given prosecutors and lawyers for Chairman Wontumi more time to continue plea discussions in the EXIM Bank loan case.

Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, is standing trial over allegations linked to a GH¢14.3 million facility obtained from EXIM Bank for a farming project.
The prosecution alleges that between 2018 and 2022, Chairman Wontumi and Thomas Antwi-Boasiako obtained the money under false pretences through Wontumi Farms Limited.
The State also claims the transactions caused financial loss of more than GH¢30 million to EXIM Bank.
When the case was called on Monday, July 6, the court was told that the parties had not completed the plea negotiation process.
The adjournment is therefore expected to allow the prosecution and defence to continue engagements and report back to the court.
Chairman Wontumi is also accused of presenting a forged receipt to EXIM Bank officials to support an application for an additional GH¢4 million facility.
He further faces a money laundering charge based on allegations that he knowingly benefited from funds allegedly obtained through fraudulent means.
His lawyers had earlier requested plea negotiations with the prosecution.
Any agreement reached through the plea discussions will require the approval of the court before it can take effect.
The case will return to court on July 27.
