Communication Ministry to table bill against online fraud, fake news, hate speech
Once passed, the legislation will target rising cyber-related crimes, including online fraud, scams, harassment, and blackmail, which violate the rights and safety of digital users.
The Ministry of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation has announced plans to lay before Parliament the Misinformation, Disinformation, and Hate Speech Bill in the coming weeks.
Once passed, the legislation will target rising cyber-related crimes, including online fraud, scams, harassment, and blackmail, which violate the rights and safety of digital users.
Sector Minister Samuel Nartey George disclosed this during the launch of National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM) 2025 on September 3, 2025, emphasizing that anyone found guilty under the proposed law will face severe criminal penalties.
He also revealed that the Ministry is working to amend Section 38 of the Cybersecurity Act, 2020 (Act 1038) to better respond to emerging threats in Ghana’s digital space.
In addition, the Minister issued a stern warning to Ghanaians involved in online fraud schemes targeting foreigners, making clear that the government is intensifying its crackdown on such criminal activities.
