CJ removal probing committee begins hearings today
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed by Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution after a prima facie case was established.
A five-member committee constituted by President John Mahama to investigate allegations of misconduct against Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo will commence hearings on Thursday, May 15, 2025.
The committee, chaired by Supreme Court Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, was formed by Article 146(6) of Ghana’s 1992 Constitution after a prima facie case was established. The President set up the committee in consultation with the Council of State, as required by law.
According to official sources, the panel will meet three times each week and is mandated to submit its findings and recommendations to the President upon conclusion of its proceedings.
Chief Justice Torkornoo is currently serving a suspension following the submission of five separate petitions alleging various forms of misconduct. Her suspension was announced by President Mahama shortly after the committee was formed to ensure an impartial investigation process.
This latest development follows earlier steps by the president to formally consult the Council of State, fulfilling constitutional obligations tied to disciplinary proceedings involving the head of the judiciary.
The work of the committee is being closely monitored as it marks a rare instance of a sitting chief justice being formally investigated under Ghana’s constitutional framework.
