A Sekondi District Court on Monday remanded a Chinese national, Xue Hue, into police custody, following his arrest for assaulting his Ghanaian employee last week.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect, Xue Hue, on September 28, 2022, allegedly attacked the victim, who is a mason with a construction company at Kweikuma, (a suburb of Takoradi, in the Western Region) with a knife inflicting a cut on his neck. The victim has since been treated and discharged,” a statement from the police said at the time of Xue’s arrest.

Prosecutors confirmed reports indicating that the incident happened during the course of an argument over unpaid salaries.

The lawyer for the accused, who argued for bail, stated that his client was remorseful and has since instructed his company to pay the medical expenses of the victim, Isaac Boateng.

However, the presiding judge, Her Worship Nana Abena Asoh Owusu Omenyo, denied the request, stating that, it is only a trial court that can grant the accused person bail.

Charged with attempted murder, he is to reappear on October 11, for committal proceedings.
