Central University SRC Week suspended after NACOC arrests students over cannabis-infused ice cream, toffees
In a statement dated June 19, 2026, the university said the incident reportedly occurred during a programme connected to the Students’ Representative Council Week celebrations.
Central University has suspended the remaining activities of its SRC Week celebrations after five students were reportedly arrested by the Narcotics Control Commission.
The students are alleged to be linked to the production and sale of cannabis and cannabis-infused products on campus.
Management of the university says it is engaging NACOC and other relevant authorities to establish the facts surrounding the arrests.
In a statement dated June 19, 2026, the university said the incident reportedly occurred during a programme connected to the Students’ Representative Council Week celebrations.
The statement, signed by the Registrar, said the university had taken notice of media reports about five individuals currently in NACOC custody.
“At this stage, the University is engaging with NACOC and other relevant authorities to establish the facts and obtain verified information regarding the circumstances surrounding the matter,” it said.
The university added that because investigations are ongoing, it would not speculate on the matter.
It said due process must be allowed to take its course.
The students are said to be in Levels 100, 300 and 400.
They were reportedly arrested following intelligence on alleged drug-related activities within the university community.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the students were allegedly involved in producing and selling cannabis-infused products, including ice cream, sobolo, toffees, pepper and eggs.
They are also alleged to have dealt in raw cannabis.
Authorities are said to have seized quantities of suspected substances for forensic examination.
Central University said the suspension of the remaining SRC Week activities was a precautionary measure aimed at maintaining order and safety on campus.
Management said the suspension would remain in place while it reviews the circumstances of the incident and existing event management protocols.
The university assured students, staff, parents, alumni and the public that it is cooperating fully with the relevant authorities.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a safe and disciplined learning environment.
NACOC officials have also warned students against involvement in the trafficking, production or consumption of narcotic substances.
The arrested students are expected to assist investigators as efforts continue to establish the full scope of the alleged operation and determine whether other persons were involved.
