The suspects, 42-year-old driver Mohammed Gzali and his conductor Mohammed Jabir, were picked up around 19:00 GMT on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier.
Police have arrested a commercial bus driver and his mate after more than 1,000 rounds of ammunition were allegedly found hidden in luggage on a northbound coach.
The suspects, 42-year-old driver Mohammed Gzali and his conductor Mohammed Jabir, were picked up around 19:00 GMT on Tuesday, 6 January 2026, at the Kantanso–Asankare Police Barrier.
They were in charge of a Kia Grand Bird bus with registration number AK 1309–21, travelling from Accra to Tamale with a final destination of Savelugu.
Officers conducting routine checks reportedly became suspicious and, on the orders of the Divisional Commander, carried out a detailed search of the vehicle.
Police say they discovered a fertiliser bag hidden among passengers’ luggage containing 1,050 rounds of AAA and BB shotgun cartridges. The ammunition has since been seized as evidence, and the bus impounded.
During initial questioning, Gzali is said to have told officers that an unknown man at the bus terminal had given him the sack as a parcel to be delivered in Tamale to someone he only knew by the name “Oboye”.
Both the driver and his mate are in police custody assisting with investigations, as officers work to trace the source of the ammunition and identify its intended recipient.
The Ghana Police Service has assured the public that further information will be communicated as inquiries continue.
