Bono Region: Taskforce arrests, burns mining equipment of illegal miners

The security task force of the Bono Region has arrested a 27-year-old gentleman for engaging in illegal mining at Sadik-Akuraa near Banda Ahenkro in the Banda District.

Kingsley Acheampong was arrested by the task force headed by the Regional Minister, Justina Owusu-Banahene. The team further burnt, seized mining equipment, and handed the suspect over to the police.

Upon seeing the task force, some of the illegal miners escaped.

However, Acheampong was arrested, having been left by his colleagues in one of the mining pits.

Mr.Acheampong told the task force that he is a married man with two children. He indicated that illegal mining was his only source of income and further asked for mercy from the task force.

According to the Regional Minister, the task force will not countenance activities of unscrupulous miners who are disregarding the directive of the president on illegal mining.

She further directed the Judiciary and Police in the region to facilitate the timely prosecution of illegal mining suspects to serve as a deterrent to others.

The Regional Minister additionally directed the Municipal and District Assemblies in the region to collaboratively map out strategies with the chiefs to deal with illegal miners.
