Beware of deepfake scams using leaders’ faces-CSA warns
According to the Authority, cybercriminals are deploying artificial intelligence tools to create highly realistic but fabricated clips featuring the likeness of national leaders, ministers, MPs, government officials, and even popular media personalities.
The Cyber Security Authority (CSA) has sounded the alarm over a surge in AI-generated deepfake videos being used to peddle fake investments and unapproved drugs across social media.
According to the Authority, cybercriminals are deploying artificial intelligence tools to create highly realistic but fabricated clips featuring the likeness of national leaders, ministers, MPs, government officials, and even popular media personalities.
These doctored videos, often shared on Facebook and other platforms, falsely portray influential figures endorsing fraudulent financial schemes or unsafe “miracle cures.”
The CSA cautioned that victims risk losing money, suffering identity theft, or consuming dangerous products. It urged the public to be alert to red flags such as lip-sync errors, odd eye movements, robotic voices, or inconsistent lighting in suspicious videos.
“Always verify endorsements through official government or regulatory sources,” the statement stressed, advising Ghanaians to confirm investment opportunities with the Bank of Ghana and health-related claims with the Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) before acting.
To tackle the growing threat, the CSA is working with social media platforms, law enforcement, and state agencies to track, remove, and prosecute the creators of these malicious videos.
Citizens are encouraged to report suspected cybercrimes through the CSA’s 24-hour Point of Contact:
