Bekwai court jails tricycle robber for 20 years
The sentence was handed down on 12 January 2026 after prosecutors from the Bekwai Police Division secured his conviction on two counts, which the court ordered to run concurrently.
A Circuit Court in Bekwai has sentenced a young man, Michael Antwi Boasiako, to 20 years in prison for his role in a brutal robbery on a tricycle rider near Wawase in the Ashanti Region.
The sentence was handed down on 12 January 2026 after prosecutors from the Bekwai Police Division secured his conviction on two counts, which the court ordered to run concurrently.
The case stems from an incident on 14 August 2025, when Antwi Boasiako and an accomplice, who is still on the run, hired a tricycle rider, Godfred Tabi, under the pretext of travelling to a cottage at Wawase.
Midway through the journey, the pair turned on their victim. They attacked him, tied his hands and legs, and lashed him to a cocoa tree before making off with his tricycle.
Despite the ordeal, Mr Tabi managed to loosen his hands and free himself. He made his way to a nearby cottage and contacted his elder brother, who quickly mobilised others to rescue him.
As the rescue team headed towards the area, they spotted the stolen tricycle being ridden away. They moved to intercept it. One of the riders escaped, but the other was overpowered and arrested.
Police arrived shortly afterwards and took the suspect into custody.
Briefing journalists after the sentencing, Ashanti South Regional Police Commander, DCOP Joseph Nyaaba, said investigations linked Antwi Boasiako directly to the attack and theft.
He was subsequently charged, tried, and sentenced to 20 years’ imprisonment on the two counts.
