Bekwai: Teacher jailed for stealing from bank

A 36-year-old teacher from Freso SDA Junior High School (JHS) in the Bekwai Municipality has been sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment with hard labor by the Asante Bekwai Circuit Court.
John Ankomah Boateng was found guilty of unlawfully withdrawing over GH¢238,550 from Bosomefreho Rural Bank Limited using the GhanaPay app, despite his account holding only GH¢2.23 at the time.
Boateng admitted to the charges and was convicted on his own plea by the presiding judge, Mr. Isaac Apietu.
According to Detective Chief Inspector Eric Twum, who led the prosecution, the fraudulent transactions took place between February 9 and February 26, 2024. The case was reported to the Ashanti South Regional CID on February 28, leading to Boateng’s arrest on March 13, 2024.
During interrogation, Boateng confessed and disclosed that he had distributed the stolen funds among several acquaintances for safekeeping. He sent GH¢10,000 to an individual named Isaac, GH¢5,000 to Kwaku, GH¢20,000 to Duah, and GH¢5,000 to Neymar. Additionally, he transferred GH¢40,000 to a travel agent to facilitate his travel arrangements.
Following thorough investigations, Boateng was officially charged and brought before the court for prosecution.
