Ballot box dispute ends in GH¢2,400 fine for Asante Mampong mechanic
The Nsuta Circuit Court has fined 30-year-old mechanic Musah Jalilu, also known as Pepe, after he admitted slapping a nurse during the party’s polling station executive election.
An attempt to question the removal of a ballot box during an internal NPP election at Asante Mampong ended in assault and a court conviction.
The Nsuta Circuit Court has fined 30-year-old mechanic Musah Jalilu, also known as Pepe, after he admitted slapping a nurse during the party’s polling station executive election.
The victim, Theresah Osei Yeboah, had gone to vote at a polling station located on the premises of the Ghana Water Company on May 14.
According to the prosecution, she noticed Jalilu and another person carrying away a ballot box and the voters’ register while the exercise was ongoing.
When she questioned their action, Jalilu became angry and slapped her on the left cheek.
The incident was reported to the Asante Mampong Police the same day.
The complainant was issued with a police medical form for examination and treatment.
Jalilu was arrested four days later, on May 18.
Police say he admitted the assault in a cautioned statement taken in the presence of an independent witness.
He was later put before the Nsuta Circuit Court, where he pleaded guilty.
The court, presided over by His Lordship Simon Nkatiah Gagah, convicted him on his own plea.
Jalilu was ordered to pay a fine of GH¢2,400 or serve six months in prison.
The court also awarded GH¢800 compensation to the complainant for medical expenses.
If he fails to pay the compensation, he will serve an additional two months in prison.
Chief Inspector Kofi Amankwaah prosecuted the case.
The conviction adds to growing concerns about disturbances during internal political party elections and the need for supporters to resolve disputes without violence.
