Bagbin pushes committee to fast-track anti-LGBTQ+ Bill

Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has asked the committee working on the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, 2025, to submit its report before the current parliamentary meeting ends.
The directive was given on Thursday, May 21, when Parliament resumed sitting.
Mr Bagbin told the House that the bill remains a major issue of public interest and must be moved forward in the legislative process.
The Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-LGBTQ+ bill, has generated intense public debate in Ghana.
It has received strong backing from religious bodies and traditional authorities, while also drawing criticism from human rights groups and some international organisations.
The Speaker said Parliament was aware of concerns raised by sections of the public over delays in the passage of the bill.
He added that the House recognised the expectations of citizens who have shown keen interest in the legislation.
According to Mr Bagbin, the committee responsible for the bill has completed its public hearings and stakeholder consultations.
This, he said, means the bill can now move to the next stage for consideration by the House.
The Speaker’s comments follow earlier assurances that the current Parliament is committed to passing the bill.
A previous version of the proposed law failed to take effect after former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo did not assent to it before the last Parliament was dissolved.
Mr Bagbin has consistently argued that the bill reflects the cultural values and expectations of many Ghanaians.
