Baby sale attempt exposes alleged prostitution ring at Gbane mining community
Three suspects, Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levy, have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
An alleged attempt to sell a newborn baby for GH¢20,000 has led police in the Upper East Region to uncover a suspected human trafficking and prostitution operation at Gbane in the Talensi District.
Three suspects, Peace Agbede, Favour Sunday Udo and Faith Levy, have been arrested and are currently in police custody.
They are expected to be put before court.
The police say the case began with a young woman who was allegedly brought from Nigeria to Ghana under the promise of a career in the Ghanaian movie industry.
According to investigators, the main suspect, Peace Agbede, allegedly convinced the victim to travel to Ghana because of her beauty, claiming she could help her enter the film industry.
But when the victim arrived, the promise was not fulfilled.
Police say she was instead taken to Gbane-Tongo, a mining community, where she was allegedly forced into prostitution.
Investigators allege that the victim was required to pay GH¢400 daily to Peace Agbede, described by police as her “madam.”
The police further disclosed that the victim became pregnant while trapped in the suspected trafficking arrangement.
She gave birth on June 26, 2026.
Shortly after the delivery, Peace Agbede and Favour Sunday Udo allegedly visited her and attempted to persuade her to sell the newborn baby.
Police say the suspects claimed there was an interested buyer willing to pay GH¢20,000 for the child.
The incident triggered further investigations and a police operation.
During a search of Peace Agbede’s room, officers reportedly found six sales record books bearing the names Esther, Mary, Bright and Silver.
Police also recovered 265 unused condoms.
Four female victims, aged between 18 and 20, were rescued during the operation.
The victims are expected to receive support while investigations continue.
The Upper East Regional Police Command says it is still investigating the full scope of the alleged trafficking network and the roles played by each suspect.
Police say the suspects will be arraigned before court to face the appropriate charges.
