Atta Akyea faults prosecution after no-show in Adu-Boahene trial
Lead counsel Samuel Atta Akyea criticised the Attorney-General’s Office after no representative appeared in court for the continuation of the cross-examination.
Lawyers for former National Signals Bureau Director-General, Kwabena Adu-Boahene, say they were ready to continue cross-examining the fourth prosecution witness on Wednesday, September 2. Still, the case could not proceed because the prosecution team was absent.
Lead counsel, Samuel Atta Akyea, criticised the Attorney-General’s Office after no representative appeared in court to continue the cross-examination.
The Accra High Court subsequently adjourned the case to September 8, 2026.
Mr Atta Akyea said the development was surprising, especially after the court had granted the defence an additional day to complete its cross-examination under strict time limits.
“I was surprised that no single human being from the Attorney-General’s Office was able to come for the cross-examination to continue. We were battle-ready, but they, who are in ambulance mode to prosecute this case, did not show up,” he said.
The previous day, the court had given the defence three hours to conclude the cross-examination of the fourth prosecution witness.
Mr Atta Akyea had said he had prepared about 60 questions for the witness but would reduce them to about 40 because of the time limit imposed by the court.
He maintained that the extra day was important to allow the defence to cover relevant portions of the witness’s testimony.
According to him, the Attorney-General’s absence was explained by his appearance before the Supreme Court in another matter.
Mr Atta Akyea, however, argued that the prosecution should have anticipated the clash and asked the court for a different date.
He said the prosecution’s failure to do so was difficult to reconcile with what he described as its push to move the trial quickly.
The adjournment means the defence will have to wait until September 8 to resume its cross-examination.
Mr Adu-Boahene is standing trial over allegations relating to GH¢49.1 million allegedly meant for the procurement of a cyber defence system.
He is being tried together with his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, and Advantage Solutions Limited.
The accused persons have denied the charges against them.
