Asokore Mampong court remands two more suspects over lynching of 27-year-old

The number of suspects remanded in connection with the alleged lynching of 27-year-old Yusuf Zakari at Sabon Zongo has risen to five.

This follows the remand of two additional suspects by the Asokore Mampong District Court on Monday, July 27, 2026.

The two, Mohammed Amadu, 21, and Halidu Issaka, 22, were arrested last Wednesday in connection with the incident.

They joined three earlier suspects who had already been remanded by the same court.

Police say Yusuf Zakari was allegedly attacked by a group of people at a cattle kraal at Sabon Zongo in the Asokore Mampong Municipality on July 19, 2026.

He had allegedly been accused of stealing GH₵4,800.

According to investigators, he sustained severe injuries and was first taken to the Manhyia Government Hospital.

He was later referred to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The first three suspects arrested were Moses Adoko, 37, a plumber; Abubakari Adams, 25, a herdsman; and Nurudeen Suleman, 35, a motor mechanic.

They were arraigned last week and remanded into police custody.

When Amadu and Issaka appeared before the court, the prosecution asked for them to be remanded to allow police to continue investigations.

The prosecution also told the court that investigators were pursuing other suspects believed to be connected to the case.

Counsel for the two accused persons opposed the application for remand.

He argued that his clients were not flight risks and were ready to appear before the court whenever required.

“We canvassed all the arguments, but the court disagreed with us to give them bail,” counsel said after the proceedings.

The court, presided over by Her Worship Mrs Hilder Esther Wryter, upheld the prosecution’s request and remanded the two accused persons into custody.

They are expected to reappear on August 7, 2026.

That is the same date fixed for the three other suspects already on remand.

Counsel for the accused persons, Wilfred Nana Asabre Mensah, said although he was not satisfied with the ruling, he respected the decision of the court.

The mother of the deceased, who was in court, said she would continue to follow the case until justice is served.
