Ashanti Region: Police foil planned highway gold robbery, arrest alleged mastermind
The suspect, identified as Stephen Kwakye, was picked up on 30 December 2025 after police received intelligence that a gang was plotting to attack a miner
The Ashanti South Regional Police Command says it has arrested a man believed to be the brains behind a planned armed robbery targeting a gold courier at Manso Abrense, near Manso Nsiana in the Ashanti Region.
The suspect, identified as Stephen Kwakye, was picked up on 30 December 2025 after police received intelligence that a gang was plotting to attack a miner who regularly transports gold to Kumasi for sale.
According to a police statement, preliminary investigations suggest Kwakye played a coordination and surveillance role, allegedly tracking the victim’s movements and liaising with accomplices to ambush him while in transit.
Officers are said to have placed the suspect under covert monitoring and allowed the plan to progress under controlled conditions. Kwakye was arrested when he allegedly surfaced to claim his supposed share of the loot after being told the operation had been “successful”.
During questioning, the suspect reportedly admitted his role in arranging the robbery.
He is currently in police custody assisting investigators, while a manhunt is under way to locate and arrest his alleged accomplices so they can be prosecuted.
