Asante Kotoko SC has strongly denounced the violent incidents that disrupted their Ghana Premier League match week 19 clash against Nsoatreman FC at Nana Kronmansah II Park.

In an official statement, the club detailed how their team encountered hostility from sections of the home supporters upon their arrival at the stadium.

Despite the tense atmosphere, Kotoko remained focused on fair competition and proceeded with the match. However, the situation escalated when projectiles were continuously hurled at their bench, creating a hazardous environment for both players and officials.

During the game, Kotoko’s Head of Media sustained a serious ear injury after being struck by an object. The violence intensified further when some fans stormed the pitch and physically assaulted Kotoko’s goalkeeper, Mohammed Camara, while also throwing more objects at him.

Reports also indicate that media personnel and visiting supporters from Kumasi faced similar attacks beyond the playing field.

Tragically, a devoted Kotoko supporter, popularly known as “Polley,” who was stabbed during the unrest, later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

The club expressed profound grief over the loss, extending heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the entire Kotoko community.

In addition to the physical attacks, significant damage was inflicted on the club’s property, including laptops, communication devices, and other crucial equipment used by the technical and media teams.

Kotoko described the destruction as unacceptable and called for stricter security measures at league venues to prevent such incidents in the future.

Despite these challenges, the team remained professional and completed the match in the spirit of sportsmanship.

However, the club voiced serious concerns about the rising trend of hooliganism in Ghanaian football, emphasizing the dangers it poses to players, officials, and fans.

Asante Kotoko reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating with the Ghana Football Association in any investigations and urged for decisive action against those responsible for the violence.

The club stressed the importance of ensuring that football is played in a safe and fair environment, calling on all stakeholders to implement measures that will safeguard teams, officials, and supporters.

Kotoko remains dedicated to professionalism and fair play in Ghanaian football, urging an end to acts of violence that threaten the integrity of the sport.
