Investigative journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his outfit, Tiger Eye PI, have responded to a U.S. court's decision to significantly reduce the defamation damages initially awarded in their favor against former Ghanaian MP Kennedy Agyapong.
In a press statement dated May 11, 2025, Tiger Eye PI confirmed that the Essex County Superior Court in New Jersey has cut the damages from a staggering $18 million to just $500. This came after Mr. Agyapong filed a motion for remittitur, urging the judge to lower the jury’s award.
The judge, while affirming that Agyapong had indeed defamed Anas, ruled that the original amount was excessive and therefore reduced it.
“By filing the motion, Kennedy Agyapong essentially accepted that he had maliciously defamed me,” Anas said in the release.
Despite the sharp reduction in the financial compensation, Anas emphasized that the case was never about the money. “This has always been a pursuit of truth and accountability. The judgment itself is the real victory,” he stated.
In March 2025, a New Jersey jury found Agyapong guilty of defamation after he made several unsubstantiated claims against Anas. Anas noted that none of those accusations held up in court.
He reaffirmed his commitment to investigative journalism, promising to continue exposing corruption without fear or compromise.
