Amasaman court issues bench warrant for alleged sheep thief
The suspect, Alhassan Yunus, was expected to face charges on Wednesday after police instructed him to present himself before the court.
A Circuit Court in Amasaman has ordered the arrest of a 17-year-old herdsman who is accused of stealing five sheep valued at GH¢15,000 and subsequently failing to appear before the court.
The suspect, Alhassan Yunus, was expected to face charges on Wednesday after police instructed him to present himself before the court. His absence prompted presiding judge Mrs Akosua Anokyewaa Adjepong to issue a bench warrant and adjourn proceedings to 11 December 2025.
A second suspect, Mariwan Amadu, who is alleged to have purchased the animals, is expected to be arraigned alongside Yunus once the latter is arrested.
According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Frederick Awuah-Ansah, the complaint was filed by Mohammed Seidu, a mechanic who lives at Obeyeyie near Amasaman and is a neighbour of the teenage herdsman.
Seidu reported returning home on 18 July 2025 to discover that all five of his sheep were missing. A search of the area led him to Yunus, who was found in possession of the animals.
Police say Yunus admitted taking the sheep and claimed he handed them over to Amadu to settle a debt he owed.
Amadu, a trader based at Achiaman, was arrested on 24 July. He is said to have confirmed receiving the animals but told investigators that the sheep later wandered off while grazing and never returned.
Alhassan Yunus: unlawful entry and stealing
Mariwan Amadu: dishonestly receiving
The case will resume once Yunus is apprehended.
