The Amasaman Circuit Court has granted bail of GH¢50,000 with two sureties to a commercial motorbike (Okada) rider accused of an attempted robbery.

The accused, 21-year-old Hope Nunekpeku, also faces a charge of preparation to commit a crime, both of which he has pleaded not guilty to. His next court appearance is scheduled for January 6, 2025.

Police have identified an alleged accomplice, known only as Dickson, who remains at large.

According to Police Chief Inspector Salifu Nashiru, the complainant, a driver residing in Opah, encountered the accused, Nunekpeku, an Okada rider living in Sapeiman near Amasaman, under suspicious circumstances.

On December 4, 2023, around 9:30 p.m., the complainant parked his Sprinter Benz bus along the roadside at Shikpontele to deliver money and provisions to his wife. As he unloaded items, he noticed a motorbike with two riders approaching the driver’s side of his vehicle and peering inside.

The complainant grew suspicious and confronted them. The motorbike then moved ahead and parked in front of his vehicle. Shortly after, his wife joined him inside the vehicle, and the couple observed the riders’ actions closely.

Nunekpeku, the passenger on the motorbike, reportedly pulled an object from his clothing. Sensing danger, the complainant moved his vehicle toward the bike, prompting the riders to flee into the darkness.

The complainant immediately reported the incident to a police motorbike patrol team. Officers acted on the tip and apprehended Nunekpeku, who was found hiding a machete under his shirt. The complainant identified him as the passenger on the motorbike.

Nunekpeku was taken to the Amasaman Divisional CID for further investigation, where he admitted knowing his accomplice, named Dickson, but refused to help police locate him. Dickson managed to escape on the motorbike during the incident.
