Ahmadu Bello Uni wins first-ever ECOWAS moot court contest

Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, has emerged as the champion of the maiden ECOWAS Court of Justice Moot Court Competition, earning a ₦5 million grand prize for their outstanding legal performance.

The prestigious event, held in Niger State, brought together top law faculties from eight universities across the region. ABU’s team impressed judges with their sharp legal reasoning, persuasive advocacy, and composure throughout the competition, culminating in a thrilling final round.

The University of Jos (UNIJOS) secured second place, walking away with a ₦3 million cash award after delivering compelling legal arguments that earned admiration from both judges and spectators.

Speaking at the finale, President of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, Justice Ricardo Gonçalves, praised all participating teams, noting that the high calibre of legal advocacy demonstrated throughout the competition reflects a promising future for the legal profession in West Africa.

“From the opening ceremony to today’s intense final, this competition has showcased the immense talent, clarity of thought, and professionalism of our young legal minds,” he said.

Justice Gonçalves extended congratulations to ABU for their well-deserved win but emphasized that every student who participated was a winner in terms of knowledge gained and networks built.

In a significant development, the ECOWAS Court President also announced that the Moot Court Competition will now be held annually, with future editions expanded to include law faculties from all ECOWAS member states.

The event marks a major milestone in regional legal education and integration, offering young law students a unique platform to engage with real-world issues, sharpen their advocacy skills, and prepare for leadership roles in West Africa’s legal landscape.
