Attorney-General Dr. Dominic Ayine has confirmed that he will not be revisiting the criminal proceedings against Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson.
During a press briefing today, Dr. Ayine explained that his decision aligns with Mr. Quayson’s legal strategy, as his lawyer, Tsatsu Tsikata, has indicated that they intend to contest the charges in court.
Facing the Charges
Mr. Quayson is currently on trial for allegedly misrepresenting his Canadian citizenship status prior to the 2020 elections. He has been charged with multiple offenses, including forging a passport or travel certificate, making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and falsely declaring for public office. He has, however, pleaded not guilty to all charges.
Responding to Political Accusations
Dr. Ayine also addressed concerns about his decision to discontinue some criminal cases initiated under the previous administration. Dismissing allegations of political bias, he insisted that his actions were guided by legal and ethical principles rather than partisan influence.
As Mr. Quayson’s case moves forward in court, the legal battle over his alleged misrepresentation is set to unfold in the coming months.
