The Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Godfred Yeboah Dame on Monday inaugurated an 18-member steering- committee to develop the first National Action Plan (NAP) on Business and Human Rights.

The committee was inaugurated during the Ghana National Baseline Assessment of Business and Human Rights launch in Accra.

The baseline report is expected to give impetus for developing the national action plan on business and human rights in Ghana.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Dame said: “The National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights will promote a harmonious relationship with which both business and communities can thrive by providing a comprehensive framework for the coordination of multi-sectoral efforts to ensure respect for human rights in business operations. It will also provide guidance to the state and non-state actors on the requirement for all business operations to be conducted in accordance with human rights tenets.

“Again, it will result in positive human rights outcomes through the creation of decent jobs, the creation of health, education, and other services pursuant to the requirement for the advancement of equality by providing opportunities for marginal groups,” he added.

Charged to deliver in three months, the committee is co-chaired by Mr. Dame and the Commissioner of CHRAJ Mr. Joseph Whittal.

According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, Ghana is listed as among countries or states in where national human rights institutions and civil society organisations have begun steps in the development of a National Action Plan on Business and Human Rights.

When the committee completes its work, the country would be among countries like the US, UK, Kenya, Pakistan, Norway, Finland, Uganda, Japan, and others who have produced a National Action Plan.

Mr Whittal added that when the NAP is concluded and adopted, the CHRAJ will monitor the level of compliance to ensure adherence to the United Nations Guiding Principles.
