Afenyo-Markin sues Sammy Gyamfi for GH¢15m over extortion claim

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has filed a GH¢15 million defamation suit against the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi.

The action, filed at the High Court in Accra, also names Multimedia Group Limited as the second defendant over comments allegedly made during the 22 August 2026 edition of Newsfile on JoyNews.

According to the statement of claim, Mr Gyamfi described the Minority Leader as an “extortionist” during a discussion about the financial performance of the Ghana Gold Board.

Mr Afenyo-Markin says the allegation is false and has damaged his reputation as a lawyer, Member of Parliament, traditional leader and former Third Deputy Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament.

He claims Mr Gyamfi repeated the allegation after being questioned by the programme’s host and challenged him to institute legal action.

The Minority Leader argues that the statements suggested he habitually engages in extortion, abuses his political influence and improperly interferes in the affairs of public institutions.

He further alleges that Multimedia Group facilitated the publication of the comments through its television, radio and online platforms. He says recordings of the programme were subsequently circulated on X, Facebook, YouTube and other digital platforms.

Mr Afenyo-Markin is seeking general, aggravated and exemplary damages for libel.

He is also asking the court to order the defendants to publish a full and unconditional retraction and public apology with substantially the same prominence and reach as the original publication.

The suit additionally seeks a perpetual injunction preventing the defendants and their agents from repeating the statements or publishing similar allegations about him.

Mr Afenyo-Markin is demanding GH¢15 million in compensation, legal costs and any other relief the court considers appropriate.
