Ghana’s Chief Justice nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, has announced plans to pilot round-the-clock court operations in select jurisdictions as part of efforts to make justice more accessible and affordable.

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Monday, 10 November, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie said the initiative is among reforms being considered to address systemic delays that have made litigation “unduly expensive” for many citizens.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie revealed that discussions were ongoing to establish night courts that would operate beyond the usual working hours.

He explained that the move aims to decongest the courts, speed up hearings, and reduce backlogs — particularly in minor criminal and civil cases that often clog the system.

The proposal, he said, forms part of a broader plan to modernise Ghana’s judicial service, improve efficiency, and expand access to justice for ordinary citizens.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie emphasised that such reforms, coupled with a stronger legal aid system, would make the judiciary more responsive to public needs and help restore confidence in the justice delivery process.
