Abuja jail break: Ghana Immigration Service to institute stringent measures at borders
443 inmates are on the run according to Nigerian authorities, and terrorist group, Boko Haram has reportedly taken responsibility.
The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) has asked its commanders to put in place ‘stringent measures’ at all points of entry, following the attack on the Kuje custodial facility in Abuja last Wednesday.
443 inmates are on the run according to Nigerian authorities, and terrorist group, Boko Haram has reportedly taken responsibility.
In a letter dated July 8, 2022, to regional and sector commanders, the GIS additionally directed that they intensify patrols at the country’s entry points.
“Considering current migration trends of Nigerians within the sub-region, it is likely that most of the escapees will attempt to enter Ghana through unapproved routes.
In view of the above, I am directed to inform you to institute stringent measures at all entry Points of Entry and intensify patrols to deter and intercept all escapees who will attempt to infiltrate the country,” the letter stated.
Ghana in recent times has been found to be at high risk to extremist attacks.
A report released by the West African Center for Counter-Extremism two months ago noted that unending Bawku chieftaincy conflict, ethnic tensions in Northern Ghana, and unresolved challenges with Western Togoland separatists in the Eastern border regions amplified Ghana’s risks.
