Abu Trica extradition stay motion set for July 9

The legal fight over the planned extradition of Ghanaian socialite Frederick Kumi, popularly known as Abu Trica, has taken a new turn after the High Court in Accra brought forward the hearing of a motion seeking to halt the process.
His lawyer, Oliver Barker-Vormawor, says the court has directed both sides to appear on July 9 for the motion to stay the extradition order to be heard.
He announced the development in a Facebook post on Monday, July 6.
“The High Court has just made an order bringing forward the date for hearing of motion to Stay the extradition of Abu Trica. Both parties must appear on 9 July,” he wrote.
The motion is intended to temporarily stop Abu Trica’s extradition to the United States while his lawyers pursue further legal steps.
The development follows an earlier ruling by the High Court ordering that he be extradited to the US.
American authorities are seeking him in connection with an alleged $8 million romance scam.
Abu Trica has been in custody since December 2025.
He had earlier been granted bail by the High Court in the sum of GH¢30 million with two justified sureties after spending months in detention.
Following the extradition order, Mr Barker-Vormawor criticised the pace of the proceedings and suggested that the case could move to the Supreme Court.
“I am out of Ghana for work. I just heard that the case of Abu Trica has been fast tracked and a judge has just ordered his extradition. Hmmm. FBI 1 – Abu 1. I guess this issue goes to the Supreme Court,” he wrote on July 2.
The July 9 hearing will determine whether the extradition order should be paused pending further proceedings.
For Abu Trica, the outcome could decide whether he remains in Ghana while his lawyers challenge the order or whether the extradition process continues.
