The government has inaugurated a seven-member mediation committee to chart a roadmap for peace in Gbinyiri, Savannah Region, following violent land clashes that have claimed lives and displaced over 50,000 people.
Interior Minister Mohammed Mubarak Muntaka, speaking at the inauguration in Accra, said the initiative was a directive of the National Security Council in response to the conflict that erupted on August 23, 2025, in the Sawla-Tuna-Kalba District and spread to nearby villages.
The committee, chaired by conflict resolution expert Emmanuel Bombande, brings together figures from Parliament, faith-based groups, academia, and civil society. Other members include Alhaji Collins Dauda, Rev. Father Lazarus Annyere, Dr. Festus Aubyn, Sylvia Hormane Noagbesenu, Prof. Ramatu Alhassan, and Dr. George Amoh, who will serve as secretary.
Their mandate covers facilitating the return of displaced residents, assessing the conflict’s scale and impact, fostering reconciliation, and recommending sustainable peace-building mechanisms. Minister Muntaka emphasized the need for impartiality, transparency, and inclusiveness, stressing the involvement of traditional authorities, civil society, and security agencies.
“The people of Gbinyiri look to you as instruments of peace and healing,” the Minister noted, pledging full logistical support from his ministry. The committee has one month to submit its findings and recommendations to the government.
