56% of Ghanaians say they are confident in new police administration
On July 21st, 2021, the presidency announced the appointment of Dr George Akuffo Dampare as Acting Inspector General of Police (IGP) with effect from August 1.
56 per cent of Ghanaians have indicated confidence in the new police administration in delivering quality and professional policing. This is according to an online public survey by the Bureau of Public Safety.
The survey marked 100 days since the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Dr. Akuffo Dampare took office.
The survey also showed that 36 per cent of Ghanaians felt neutral to the question, while seven per cent said they did not feel confident in the the police to deliver quality and professional policing.
59 per cent of Ghanaians also claimed that the Police Service has seen some improvements in the last 90 days, as against 36% who claimed that things appeared same, while 6% said there has been no improvement.
The survey also noted that 57 per cent of respondents said personnel of the Police Service did not show concern for citizens, while eight per cent said police officers show concern for citizens. Regardless, 66 per cent of the respondents say they would not hesitate to call on the Police Service for assistance.
On other indicators like police response to emergencies, 53 per cent of Ghanaians indicated that the Police responded too slowly, as 16 per cent said they did not show up at all. Two per cent of respondents said the Police responded faster than expected and another 29 per cent said they responded almost on time.
The survey was conducted between Monday, October 18th, and Sunday, November 7th, 2021, sampling responses from 583 respondents.
“While we acknowledge that a 100th Day measure for the IGP has not been the norm, and thus we do not expect to see any significant changes in the realm of safety and security within this short period, we are minded by the fact that this survey will provide hints and leads into the general opinion of the public on safety and security cum police performance,” the authors of the report said.

He was later sworn into office on October 8, 2021, as substantive IGP.
In his speech during his swearing-in ceremony, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, assured President Nana Akufo Addo that he would work to make the Police Service one of the respected organisations in the country.
